ORRA is a newly founded band from Athens that released a few days ago their debut album, entitled “Unbound”.
While ORRA was founded in 2019, the band consists of experienced musicians with years in the scene and this is shown in the record. The experience, the confident performances, the structured, carefully constructed ideas, everything prove that the ORRA though young, are determined and certain of their goals.
This determination and confidence is mainly expressed in the sound of the ORRA. The “Unbound” is only the debut and yet the sound is quite original and fresh, successfully balancing different genres into a coherent sound. I am not sure if this is the best word to describe the record, but when I finished listening to the album I thought that this was a really refreshing release.
The “Unbound” is a complex and multilayered work that becomes easily accessible through its atmosphere. ORRA navigate musically through progressive and heavy metal genres that more often than not are direct and do not rely on creating an atmosphere. However, in the “Unbound” there is a haunting atmosphere that derives from the symphonic and psychedelic influences, assisting the compositions’ narrative.
Always present in every track is the groove that glues together all the ideas. The rhythmic section of the “Unbound” is really captivating with complex drum patterns and groovy bass lines that remind of a heavy metalized version of Tool. Even if there were only the drums and the bass, it would already be a very interesting album thanks to the percussive and exotic rhythmic patterns.
As I mentioned, the “Unbound” is already out a couple of days, so if you are reading this review you don’t have to wait to listen to this amazing album. ORRA has released a killer, creative album that in the end of the year, I am confident, will be discussed as one of the most interesting releases of 2022.
