SINISTER KING: “All Is Vanity” EP (26 Νοvember 2021, self-release)

Hailing from Norway, the Sinister King released their debut EP, “All is Vanity” in 2021. Without much prior history apart from a couple of singles, the band manages to leave quite the first impressions.

The first thing that draws the attention while listening to the record is the quality of the production. I don’t usually pay close attention to the overall production since I choose to trust the artist on the sound they decide to present. But with the “All is Vanity” was impossible not to make any comments about the production, since it is so masterfully produced. Clear, with a solid body it elevates every song in an individual level while at the same time compliments the overall musical approach of the EP. And when one considers that this is only a debut and an EP, the value of the production rises even higher.

Sinister King’s debut EP, musically, is built around a melodic, heavy metal core that works both as the guideline and the glue, since the album tends to walk on a thin line between groovy and progressive. Mostly to the groovy side, the musical approach is mixture of wide, catchy choruses, heavy riffs spiced up by progressive ideas and an extensive use of keys that are there to dictate the atmosphere of each song.

Every song feels unique while at the same time is a part of a solid EP that has certain structure and character. This is achieved thanks to the use of synths and keys that allow the guitars and drums to carry the rhythmic burden while they perform the atmospheric with their euphoric melodies or ominous soundscapes.
