Forbidden Myth: “Zantea Chronicles: The Dream Dominator” (17 October 2021, Self-release)

Quite unconventional yet for the occasion I believe is fitting, I would like to begin this review in a reverse way. The “Zantea Chronicles: The Dream Dominator” is an extremely interesting album both musically and lyrically, so please allow me to keep the introductions for last and dive right into the context.

Forbidden Myth’s debut feels like a theatrical play transcribed in an album form. Eight different vocalists take up the roles of the story’s protagonists, giving an actual feeling of interaction among the characters of the story. And since the album, is a concept record-its story I will mention a bit later, that kind of interaction helps a lot in keeping track with the plot while at the same time you can pay attention to the music.

So, let’s begin by talking music. The “Zantea Chronicles: The Dream Dominator” is an epic rock album that goes from the progressive rock to the heavy metal, drawing inspiration from everything between. But while it travels through riff dominant genres, in the album there is a significant lack of electric guitars and bass. And by a significant lack, I mean a total and complete absence of these instruments.

Intrigued? Well, you should be. You see, all the compositions are arranged around pianos, synthesizers and of course drums. Amazingly enough, this absence of guitars and bass has no negative effect to the overall aesthetic and once in you will find out that you won’t even miss them.

Forbidden’s Myth epic rock tale takes place in the land of Zantea. A land cursed and forced reigned over by mad kings controlled by the power of the dark lord, Vosar. Yet the land was freed by the spirit of dawn, Ovaris, who in an epic fight bested Vosar and defeated him, releasing the land of his malevolence but also erasing the magic from the world.

In the years that came after the battle, a great kingdom rose that surpassed every other in power, wealth and glory. The realm was called Mirandor and its king was Morzan, who took as his wife the priestess of Ovaris, Roziel. The queen soon gave birth to a child, a daughter destined for great power, the luminescent girl Sirin.

At this point, I am positive that you are at least interested. Now, it’s time for the introductions.
Forbidden Myth is the epic rock project of the songwriter and keyboardist Antonis Adelfidis. The album “Zantea Chronicles: The Dream Dominator” is based on a story by Myrto Gregoriadi and consists of 20 songs, narrating the story of two spirits, one mad king and a girl destined for great power.

A well-constructed world by Myrto, a beautiful tale in a fantasy land, dressed with epic rock music by Antonis, compose a great concept album and a powerful debut. The title speaks of chronicles, so I hope that this will not be the first and last album of Forbidden Myth. But for the time, let’s enjoy and focus on the great “Dream Dominator”.
