Interview with WARRIOR WITHIN: "We are in it to express the music that is inside of us & not copy other bands' sounds."

1) Hello guys! How are you doing?

Hi, we are going well thanks.

2) We really liked your new lyric video “Opus”. We can call this “real music”. How do you feel on this?

Thanks for that, I believe we understand what you mean by real music. Our music consists of original structures and progressions with original melodies & interesting lyrics. We come from a traditional metal approach as opposed to a modern pop metal approach that holds quality music composition at the center of what we do.

3) Tell us a few words about the band and the musicians that you have in the band.

Warrior Within are a Thrash - Speed metal band from Queensland Australia.
Warrior Within is made up of Scott Macintyre on vocals, brothers Taso on guitars & Toli on Bass & Tom Johnson on drums. We love playing metal it’s what keeps us going.

4) Being from Australia, makes you have a big tradition in music. What is your opinion about music in your country?

Australia has produced strong bands that have achieved successful careers from all genres but especially in rock.
Australia has a very big underground scene. For a number of decades there has been a lot of mainstream genre trend following, but in the last number of years there has been a lot more interest in the heavier genres.
We still however have a small population compared to Europe.
In Australia, independent bands can drive across the country for a handful of gigs, a distance that would span the whole of Europe, making it very costly to reach a wider audience.

5) How is your mood about Covid-19? Did this influence the band?

We kept a low profile during the worst of Covid-19. Venue restrictions took the fun out of playing. These restrictions limited crowd numbers & enforced sitting down at gigs.
Metal & sitting down for us just doesn’t mix.
We put our attention to recording music & releasing videos during this time.
We now have a few gigs booked for 2022. If things go well with everything opening up again 2022 will be a good year for Warrior Within.

6) Do you consider that being so unique as a band is an advantage or a disadvantage for you?

That is an insightful question. If I understand what you mean correctly, we find people in general look for bands that sound like the big bands that they already listen to.
So if you have a unique sound that doesn’t copy a big bands sound, it takes time for people to catch on to your sound & follow you. People need to see you live to really engage & get into your sound.
So in a way it is a disadvantage being unique but none the less a strength in the long term. For us, copying other bands is not an option. We are in it to express the music that is inside of us & not copy other bands' sounds. That to us is what being a musician is about.

7) Who writes the lyrics and what they are about?

Toli & I (Taso) write the lyrics, we cover topics such as sociopolitical, environmental, esoteric & historical events. These topics cover a lot of life’s areas.
Our moto is: Think for yourself, life is too precious”

8) Are there any other musical projects for the members of Warrior Within?

No, Warrior Within is our primary focus. Warrior Within is like our child, we nurture it & feed it with the strength of all our attention. We, the founding members Taso & Toli thankfully are really aligned with our music tastes & creative direction.

9) What was your best live performance ever and how did you feel?

We have had many awesome gigs with great crowd response. However, a great performance was at the Wacken Metal Battle Brisbane in 2020, just before the pandemic hit. That was a great show.

10) What are your plans with Warrior Within? Do you feel this only a project or a full band that will last for years?

This is a full band. Toli & I have been writing & performing Warrior Within songs since 1992 & intend to focus on playing Warrior Within songs for as long as possible.

10) Keep up the nice work, guys! Metal on!

Thanks!! Live to Thrash - Thrash to Live!
