Hot Sunday Blood – “Kein Licht” (Snooky Records, 17 December 2019)

Hot Sunday Blood is an Italian band formed in Turin in 2013 with notable action in concerts. The band has already produced two full- length albums and in 2019, Hot Sunday Blood released the EP, “Kein Licht” that consists of 6 songs, “Habits/Abyss”, “Kein Licht”, “No Way Out”, “The Long Winter’s Embrace”, “Time Machine” and “40 Steps”.

At first it is not obvious but with every listen after the first, the unique musical signature of Hot Sunday Blood becomes clear. What at the first listening seems one dimensional and generic with the time unfolds and shows its true self, revealing the multiple musical influences and layers of inspiration.

The sound, in its basis and core, is alternative rock with heavy rock influences. It reminds heavily of bands like the Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin or in a heavier tone, Disturbed, inspirations that form a vibrant and energetic sound. Steady and solid guitar riffs, expressive vocals, powerful drum work and a few punk elements here and there to power the endeavour, fix a fun and vivid rock album.

That’s alternative rock/metal side of the album, but there is also the heavy rock variable. While it is mostly complementing, it plays a key role as the glue that holds the whole construction together. Groovy and aggressive riffs and bluesy licks in the leads are the spices of the record.

Just before I close this review, I would like to mention my two favourite moments of the EP. The first is the song “No Way Out” that felt like something out of a Rob Zombie song during the “Hellbilly” era with a metalcore twist that elevates the composition. The second is the intro of the “The Long Winter’s Embrace” which gave me a really beautiful feeling of familiarity, since it reminded of the band The Mayan Factor.

Concluding, if you are searching for a fun, enjoyable, vibrant and energetic record to listen to, with multiple influences and well executed ideas, search no more for the “Kein Licht” is the kind of album you want.
