Subfire: “Define The Sinner” (10 September 2021, Symmetric Records)

Hailing from Greece, Subfire begun their journey in 2004 and 17 years later, they officially present themselves through their first full-length work, “Define The Sinner”.

Subfire took a difficult decision that now has proven beneficial and maybe the best they ever taken as band. You see, in all these years Subfire had many line-up changes that didn’t allow the band to form a core sound and to develop themselves musically. So, they took the long road and waited. They preferred to delay the presentation of any music until they feel that they had their own sound, a musical vision that could reflect the quality of their ideas. And their patience paid off, by releasing an album like the “Define The Sinner”. An album that will pay off all the years of preparation by offering a great listening experience to the fans.

The “Define The Sinner” is a straightforward heavy/power metal album. Subfire has taken great care to present their work in the accustomed power metal fashion. The figure that reminds of a Templar knight in the artwork, the letters that seem dragon-like on the band’s name, every single detail is has its place and importance, composing an album that is both aesthetically and musically pleasing.

Musically, the “Define The Sinner” is a traditional heavy/power metal album, as a heavy metal album should be. Strong, heavy, epic riffs, shredding solos, fast drum work, wide choruses and beautiful melodic lines, compose the debut of Subfire. Now that may sounds like a generic approach in heavy/power songwriting, but rest assured it is not. Subfire has formed their own musical character, which draws inspiration from the traditional guidelines and the greats, but concludes into something new and fresh that defines the band or better, “defines the sinner”.

Concluding, I will repeat the already stated fact that “Define The Sinner” is a great debut and it definitely pays off the patience and effort of Subfire. The only thing the left is to give it a chance and rest assured you will not regret it.
