ANDY ROCKS: “Look at what we’ve done!” (26 July 2021, Soman Records)

After releasing some singles and EP, the German band Andy Rocks ended up picking some of these moments plus some new songs and released their first debut album via Soman Records! Similar to their name, the expected result is some 80s inspired hard rock that ends up coming about to a much modern alternative rock especially because of the unique voice of Andrea Weiss!

“Look At What We’ve Done” the great homonymous track is essentially what “Zombie” from The Cranberries could have been, if it had been recorded back in the 90s and was more focused in alternative metal. Even the voice is quite close to the majesty of great Dolores (RIP). The rest of the album is also consisted of songs with many hooks and great musicianship. It’s not a dark album and does make time for some pristine ballad work as only Andy Rocks can deliver…check “Time Flies” and you will understand. Really unique vocals close to a charismatic child that sings!

There’s top notch moments littered throughout this album, as well as a couple of somewhat just fine moments. The good include the songs mentioned earlier, along with the hard rock hymn “Regret” including some awesome guitar solos and the nostalgic ballad “Keep On Pretending”,  that has some Red Hot Chili Peppers feel on it. But there are no weak spots here and there are mostly found exciting rock musical passages that prove the nice quality of all the other music on here.

Although this album is probably not the most famous debut of the year, they can become a band that everyone will tend to remember them. It’s definitely something that takes some time to fully get into and they will have to improve production before they will completely get it.
High promises from this debut and Andy Rocks are here to stay!
