BLACK ALTAR: "Arcana of the Higher Principles" (11 July 2022, Zazen Sounds)

Zazen Sounds recently released the new compilation of Black Altar, entitled “Arcana of the Higher Principles”. It is a compilation of tracks from the 3 splits with Kirkebrann, Beastcraft and Varathron/Thornspawn. As a bonus, there is a new composition with the same title, which was specially recorded for this release.

A compilation featuring all of the Black Altar’s songs from 3 great black metal EPs is a real treat for the black metal fans. Especially, if you listen to Black Altar. This newly released compilation is a powerful dose of pure, orthodox black metal by one of the most consistent bands in terms of quality.

The Black Altar are taking you into a chaotic trip through the vast darkness with their abysmal and thundering black metal sound, which surprisingly manages to transmit all the proper feelings of filth, while maintaining a fairly clean sound and an exemplary production. If you have already listened to the EPs, then you know exactly what to expect, but for those who will be introduced to the musical world of Black Altar through this compilation, be prepared for an aggressive black metal, which balances the fast-paced, sharp riffs with a ritualistic aesthetic, a few bursts of groove and the signature, haunting melodic lines that create an eerie contrast.

As to the specially recorded track, entitled “Arcana of the Higher Principles”, the Black Altar have, without a doubt, delivered a great black metal song. Composed in the essence of the Black Altar with sharp, fast, aggressive riffs, thundering drumming and prominent bass lines, the “Arcana of Higher Principles” has some distinctive melodic lines that could remind of bands like the Dissection and an absolutely haunting and melodic, acoustic interlude that assists in the shaping of an unholy atmosphere.
Concluding, while not completely new, the Black Altar’s “Arcana of the Higher Principles” compilation, is one of the black metal releases that you should definitely check out in 2022, since it is both a great introduction to the sound of Black Altar, while, also, a great chance for an unholy recap for the fans of the band.
