BLACK REUSS: “JOURNEY” (6 May 2022, self-release)

Black Reuss’ dusking new release entitled “Journey”, released recently as a follow-up and a conceptual sequel of his previous work, “Metamorphosis”. The second chapter is now unveiled and calls the audition to walk along Black Reuss in his journey through life and experience the world through his eyes and mind.

Both releases are part of a 4 chapter album compilation, a series of albums that each one has its own specific thematic regarding the passage through life. With the “Metamorphosis”, Black Reuss introduces the audience into the first chapter of his philosophical approach. In that record, he is a man torn between worlds trying to find his footing and place in the world. He has to transform and change, to find his place in the world before he can be able to begin the second phase, the “Journey”.

Now, through the course of the “Journey”, Black Reuss has to face the obstacles that block his path. He needs to set himself free from the material things, to loosen the grip that controls his life and take decisions for himself. By courage, dedication and momentum and through struggles and pain, he must finish the “Journey”, in order to begin the third chapter of his life, the “Arrival”.

In the “Journey” the musical borders among genres are bent, with the Black Reuss  blending the gothic and the post-punk aesthetic and sound with the heavy metal and the heavier, doom metal inspired riffs that play an important role in this album and shape it heavily. Also, in the course of the record some industrial elements can be spotted, being more prominent in the song “Hole”, while songs like the “Deep-Seated” that flirts with some more grungy/psychedelic influences show the desire of Black Reuss for musical experimentation. Thankfully, his experiments are spot on and not only they color the overall aesthetic but they add an element of surprise that, personally, I find really intriguing.

Being a concept album, the “Journey” needs to be both coherent and cohesive, with a sound tight and powerful enough to express this philosophical journey that the artist presents. With the songs succeeding one another smoothly, without unexpected and off sounding transitions, Black Reuss’ second work is the perfect sequel to his previous work, an intriguing album excels both in lyrical concept and musicianship.
