SILENT WINTER: “Empire of sins” (26 Μarch 2021, Pride & Joy Music)

Silent Winter was initially formed in the middle of 90's in the city of Volos in central Greece. The band recorded and released two demo tapes entitled "Silent Winter" and "War of an Angel”, before they disband.

In 2018, the group was reformed with new members, releasing an EP entitled “The War Is Here”. One year later, the Silent Winter released their first album, “The Circles of Hell”, which was received with enthusiasm by the fans, making the band one of the most promising upcoming bands in the power metal scene.

With their latest release, “Empire of Sins”, the Silent Winter fulfilled the promises made in “The Circles of Hell” by unleashing a flavourful, lively and exciting power metal record.

The album begins with the track “Gates of Fire”, which sets the pace for the entire album, and immediately grabs you by the neck and doesn’t leave you before the very last second. The song crashes like thunder, full of speed and fury with the lyrics narrating the story of the 300 Spartans.

Musically, the album moves towards the European power metal scene, with a cleaner production, higher tempo and a focus on melody and on speed with their fiery shredding solos.

While there are not many surprises in the record, since it is a straightforward and to the point power metal record, two of the songs draw my attention.

The first one is the track “Mirror” which reminds of the legendary Blind Guardian, driving the Silent Winter sound to a slightly thrashier path, adding a burst of speed and aggressiveness to the overall aesthetic without sacrificing their melodic approach.

Second is the song “Hunter’s Oath”, which begins with a spoken word part, reciting the lines “We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood”. Now if you are not a gamer this probably means nothing to you, but for us, are the words of Master Willem.  The “Hunter’s Oath” is inspired by the lore of the videogame Bloodborne, telling the stories of the hunters inside the dream.

Concluding, with the release of “Empire of Sins”, the Silent Winter claim officially their spot in the scene and in the hearts of the fans. A promising future lies ahead and I am confident that every release will be even better than the last.
