PLANESWALKER: “Tales of magic” (21 January 2022, self-release)

Planeswalker
reunites Jason Ashcraft and Sozos Michael into a new power metal band, after their collaboration in the Helion Prime album “Terror of Cybernetic Space Monster”. Their debut, “Tales of Magic”, is to be released in January 21st, 2022, with a 7 song track-list of 6 original compositions inspired by the trading game Magic: The Gathering and one cover of the famous Kiss song, “A Million to One”.

Being a fan of the franchise I understand that only by mentioning that the album is about the lore of Magic: The Gathering has intrigued you. And I honestly understand the fact that experiencing the lore of your favorite game or universe in a lyrical form is amazing and helps you connect with the record, but the lore has been existed and will continue to do so. Don’t let it distract you from the real protagonist, the compositions in the “Tales of Magic”.

The “Tales of Magic” is built and follows the patterns of the European power metal scene. Although the band was formed in the United States, they do not abide by the gritty, harsher, riff based sound of the U.S scene. Melodic lead guitars with that neo classical element always present, shredding guitar solos, wide verses with even wider choruses, epic passages and amazing vocals, compose the debut of Planeswalker.

I don’t usually mention something like this because I don’t want to make bold statements or exaggerate, but I believe that this is an occasion that an exception should be made. Both Jason and Michael are otherworldly musicians, extremely skillful with a vivid musical vision that manages to pass through their compositions. Although clearly complex and a product of great craftsmanship, the “Tales of Magic” is extremely fun and enjoyable and doesn’t get tiresome. It pays attention to the details and thrives through them by making them its “selling point”.

Planeswalker prove themselves not only through their 6 six amazing original tracks but also through their ability to translate the Kiss’ song “A Million to One” into an epic, power metal killer song that I personally never imagined possible. Seven tracks proof of dedication, skill and great musical ideas conclude the Planeswalker’s debut, a debut you should not miss.
