The “Indigo” has two years released and only now I came upon and learned about O.Y.D. So, you could tell I am bit late for the party and yet never is too late to find some good music. The fact that in 33 minutes have stuffed so much musical information makes it quite hard to gather your thoughts and not forget anything. Let me take it from the very start since there is quite a few things that need unpacking.
Beginning with some intriguing trivia, the album was recorded at Fredman Studios in Sweden, with Frederick Nordstorm in charge of the production. Without the technical terms, what the past sentence means is that the production is excellent. “Indigo” has now become for me one of those albums you use as reference when you want to give an example of a great production in the represented genre.
But there is the issue of not knowing what genre the O.Y.D. represents. As I stated before, in a 33 minutes album there is enough musical information for two full-length records. The one thing that is absolute though, is that the “Indigo” is one groovy album. Keeping the heaviness intact, O.Y.D. have taken extra care with the rhythmic section.
In the course of the 33 minutes, O.Y.D. blend in their sound the nu-metal of bands like the Korn and Mudvayne, with the metalcore and of course the groove that works as a glue holding all their inspirations together. At the closing song of the record, the “The Y Axis” there is something that reminds of Tool and Perfect Circle that although quite unexpected fits right in with the overall vibe of the album.
And yet, the real achievement of the O.Y.D. is that they created something new and unique out of all these inspirations. To mix a few genres together and find some intersections points it is not easiest thing but achievable. However, to make your own sound out of all this creative chaos is something that needs praising.
The “Indigo” is this one album that has a real character, fresh ideas, love for experimentation and always something new to discover. Simply great.
