Monkey Mind interview: "...music cannot come with a manual to explain what we really mean and this is what makes music special."

1) Hello guys! Congrats for your new video “Immunity”. Really refreshing sound! How are you?

Hello. We are fine thank you. Thanks for the kind words!

2) Tell us a few words about the recordings of your new album "Breakdown" that was out via German Boersma Records. When and where? Are you happy about the first feedback?

The recordings took place towards the end of last year at AV Playroom in Nicosia, Cyprus. We are very happy about the feedback up to now and we expect more to come with the end of summer vacations.

3) How can you describe your sound?

To be honest, we cannot really describe our sound and neither do most people that we have talked to, and this is what makes us really happy. Because we didn’t really aim for a specific sound, we simply put down what felt right for us. We tend to describe ourselves and Alternative rock/metal, but I think there is more there than just this. While we most leaned towards the rock side, most people seem to get a metal feeling of the album, which is well welcomed of course.

4) Are there any plans for another full album in the near future?

Songs are always coming and we already have new ideas and new songs, but there is not something planned for a new album yet. It is of course in the future plans.

5) Any plans for live performances?

Yes live performances are the priority right now. We have some things coming up in Cyprus and we are really pushing it for something abroad. We hope we can announce something soon.

6) Do you have any other musical projects, or you feel really dedicated about your band?

Some of us do some things on their own or on the side, but our main musical endeavor is Monkey Mind. We are all committed to the band as we really anjoy what is going on here.

7) What do you enjoy most? Recordings or stage and why?

I think I talk for everyone when I say that the stage is what we enjoy the most. The energy, communication with the audience, live performances I think is what makes a musician ehat he is. Recordings of course can also be fan, but they tend to get more technical and less spontaneous, and as a band we are very spontaneous by nature.

8) What is your opinion about the whole situation in the world today? Are you happy?

We cannot really say that we are happy about a lot of things going on, and this I think is obvious in our songs. On the other hand, we are not pessimistic either and we believe that people have the power to change things, as we suggest in ‘Immunity’. Music is a good means to achieve change, and I think this is why music is constantly hit and undermined.

9) What are your future plans about the band? Are you going to keep a steady line up or you will follow the idea of a project?

No the line up is steady. We really enjoy working together and, unless something unexpected happens, we have no plans of changing this. Of course, additions are always possible depending on the needs of the band, but there are no such thoughts at the moment.

10) Do you believe in God?

I think this is not a very simple question to answer and of course everyone has their own opinion and beliefs. The first question one needs to address is what is really God? I think I can safely say that none of us believes in the contemporary idea of God as described in religion, but we totally respect people who do believe and maybe we have our own ideas of what God might be. What we refer to in our song ‘In the name of God’ is organized religion and the way it manipulates people for reasons that have nothing to do with faith. This is why it’s called ‘In the name of God’, meaning the things humans do in the name of God.

11) Are you angry with prejudiced people judging your music?

Of course people will always misunderstand or deny what we try to communicate and this totally acceptable. When songs talk about subjects like these, such reactions are always expected. Of course music cannot come with a manual to explain what we really mean and this is what makes music special. Everyone understands it in a different way and maybe at a different time or moment in time.

12) But we really like your work! The last words are yours…

We would like to thank you for your interest. We would like to wish everyone to stay happy and healthy through these challenging times.
