Little interview with Jyrki (The 69 Eyes) [by email] - Rockpolis Media, 2008

What do you think, why some fans are not so keen on the glam elements although you began as a glam/sleaze band? It seems like only the more goth side of you exists for them.
- It's all the same as long as they still come to see our shows! The 69 Eyes remains the same.

Which concerts do you prefer: playing in smaller clubs or at festivals?
- After the festival season, I still would like it to go on! It's fresh to play outdoors, haha... But in the club the band is totally responsible for creating the atmosphere and that's fantastic when the climax is reached!

Devils and Angels had a conception. Do you have plans for the next album?
- The next album is all about the vampires!

The 69 Eyes have a mobile blog at royalartistclub.com. Do you read the comments?
- Sometimes. It's nice to read comments of people who have been at the shows after!

There are some lyrics inspired by certain movies. Have you seen any movies recently that you would write lyrics about?
- Maybe "Hunger"...

What do you think what is the reason of your being together for about 16 years with the same line-up?
- Actually The 69 Eyes will turn 20 next year! It's so much FUN!

Which one was the most memorable concert of your career?
- Live At the Whisky A Go-Go - check out our new live album!

If you had the opportunity who would be the ones you'd play together on stage?
- I'm happy with Bazie, Timo-Timo, Archzie and Jussi!

Which was the first album that you really loved?
- Elvis Presley: "G.I.Blues"

Your love towards Africa is well-known. Where does this love come from?
- Too much nature documentaries in the 70's, maybe? It just calls my soul.

If there was a time-machine, which age would you go back and why?
- Back to 1987-89, the glam rock years in New York City and L.A. I was there and those were THE days!

Do you have any pets?
- Unfortunately not.

What is your favorite past-time activity?
- Spending time by the seaside of Helsinki. Walking, reading books there, bicycling...

You love the Marvel comics and you're drawing too. What is your opinion about the Japanese comics?
- I have not read them at all.

Who is your favorite comic hero?
- Spiderman!

Zombie Love was released in 2006. Have you ever thought about publishing all of your comics and illustrations in a book?
- That is a book! The next one is coming soon...

What was your first horror movie experience of your life?
- Halloween.

What kind of books do you like to read? What books are you reading at the moment?
- I read many books at the time. Like "Exile on Main St.: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones" by Robert Greenfield, "A Game of Thrones" by George R.R. Martin, "Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere" by Mike Carey and Glenn Fabry etc.

Many people think you're too arrogant while others consider you very nice. What do you think why are the opinions about you so extreme?
- I'm an extreme person then? Sounds like an interesting guy to me. It's just entertainment.

Do you ever happen to meet people who are surprised to know that you are an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador?
- Many rock band friends of mine would like to take part in that as well, that's cool!

How did you get in touch with the organization?
- I had been in Africa and knew something about the conditions there - they asked if I wanted to know more! Of course I wanted to be involved!

Is there a campaign at the moment that you are taking part in?
- We're starting with our drummer a campaign to rescue the Baltic Sea, it's called "Pirates Of the Baltic Sea" - that's an environmental project. Other than that, I'm involved with UNICEF activities all the time as my time is permitting.

You have been a few times to Hungary. Do you remember any Hungarian words or phrases?
- Köszönöm!

Thank you for your time!
- Köszönöm!
